Noise 13 centers artists in their logo designs for CE’s 40th anniversary

In celebration of our 40th anniversary, CE partnered with Noise 13, a mission-driven strategic branding & design agency and a long-time friend of CE, to create new logos showcasing the rich and varied visual traditions of our artists.

Noise 13 helped with CE’s 2020 website relaunch and rebranding, so they were an obvious choice to help create a creative and comprehensive set of logos for CE’s 40th year. For this project, Noise 13 wanted to make sure they were encapsulating our rich history into their logo designs.

The goal was to highlight the artists as well as CE’s impact on the community. By making space in the logo design for multiple artists to be featured, we were able to highlight the breadth of styles and talent that are core to CE. CE chose a range of artists that have been with the studio for many years and a few that are new.

First, Noise 13 created a base logo that could incorporate various pieces of CE art. According to Noise 13, the "0", a perfect circle, represents a place for gathering and a frame to hold artworks.” Noise 13 conducted multiple research sessions with both CE artists and staff to understand the organization’s values and history. In one exercise, Noise 13 provided blank logos for CE artists to virtually draw on.

As designers, this was a great way for us to understand what [CE artists] wanted to see, which topics caught everyone’s attention and which ones didn’t get too much excitement.

Examples of artwork that CE artists created with Noise 13

CE staff  compiled a list of artists and art that represented the many different styles and voices of CE artists. Once the selection process was complete, Noise 13 created a total of 13 logos for CE to use throughout our 40th year.

I am happy that the dragon was chosen to celebrate 40 years. I want to continue what I’m doing. That’s what I love and that is what I enjoy. Ever since I started working on these things, it has changed my life forever.
— Ricardo Estella, CE Artist

Noise13 was thrilled to be able to show all of the unique art that the CE artists have created over the past 40 years. “By doing so, we conveyed a message that not all two artists or art pieces are the same,” said Ma and Stern. “We wanted to be able to show off the amazing people who have been with CE over the years and all the positive impact that CE has had in their community.”

Join CE this year at one of many events and exhibitions to celebrate a legacy of community, empowerment and dignity, and check back each month for a new 40th logo design!
