901 Market Street features Tranesha Smith-Kilgore sculpture installation

Tranesha Smith-Kilgore sits in the CE studio working on her multimedia creation

This spring, Tranesha Smith-Kilgore's intricate and striking multimedia sculptures are on display in the windows at 901 Market Street in San Francisco.

For the second time, Hudson Pacific Properties is featuring artwork from Creativity Explored in their Art Windows program. On view to the public 24/7, the program features installations by local artists in window displays in the busy shopping corridor.

In the fall of 2022, Elana Cooper's I Love Flowers and Kevin Roach's Eyes were selected to reflect the changing seasons of summer into fall. Now, Tranesha Smith-Kilgore’s pieces are featured for the spring season.

Tranesha Smith-Kilgore joined CE during the pandemic. Working with teaching artist Pilar Olabarria, Tranesha creates beautiful multimedia sculptures using textiles and collected odds and ends.  String, yarn, cut fabric, and ribbons are knotted together with objects like keys, bells, beads, pill bottles, and more. Tranesha ties her fibers quickly in knots, creating chains interspersed with found objects.

Anything goes. Anything that she can wrap and tie is art.
— Pilar Olabarria, Teaching Artist & Service Coordinator

Tranesha’s pieces evoke a sense of ordered chaos, combinations of discarded objects and fibers that when woven together create something else entirely. She was featured in the recent Recology Artist-in-Residence Program, where CE teaching artists scavenged at the Recology Transfer station on behalf of resident artists for materials and tools specific to their art practices. Then, in the studio, CE artists worked alongside teaching artists to realize their creative visions. Tranesha, who already works with recycled and repurposed materials, incorporated an even wider variety of found objects into her dynamic sculptures.

Tranesha’s work was exhibited in Creativity Explored exhibitions Fabricave and RELOVE , as well as at the Outsider Art Fair in 2023.  One of her multimedia sculptures will be auctioned at CE’s annual Art Changes Lives gala on April 26, 2023.

CE is proud to continue our partnership with Hudson Pacific Properties. In addition to installing artwork at the 901 Market Street Art Windows, CE hosted a holiday pop-up shop at Hudson Pacific’s Ferry Building in 2021 and 2022.

Thousands of people walk by the 901 Market Street Art Windows every day, bringing new visibility to Tranesha’s multifaceted sculpture pieces. Be sure to check out the display when you are downtown and tag @creativityexplored in your Instagram selfies to support Tranesha!
