Clementina Rivera
b. 1951; El Salvador ∙ CE artist since 2011
El Salvadorian born Clementina Rivera is a dedicated and focused artist who often finds her inspiration in the masterworks of early Modernists, like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Always eager to learn new skills, Rivera, has worked with a variety of mediums, including graphite, colored pencil, watercolor, and acrylic.
The array of works she creates encompasses stylistic qualities that are as diverse as the materials she uses. Some works are figural, with soft lines and subdued colors, while others are sharp, boldly colored geometric abstractions. Rivera’s interpretations of Modernist classics are heralds of her practice – she’s drawn to portraiture and traditional still-lifes. A true Fauvist in her contrasting application of color, Rivera incorporates and celebrates the techniques of abstraction and playful perspective in her vibrant drawings.
