Kathy Wen
b. 1985 ∙ CE artist since 2008
Kathy Wen has an infectious enthusiasm. Her graphite drawings and watercolors of animals and landscapes are spare resulting in very stylized silhouettes. Each artwork is meticulously patterned and embellished with layers of color.
Wen’s graphite drawings of animals have a confident lightness of touch that lends poise to their stylized silhouettes. She has begun integrating her bestiary into a landscape that is meticulously patterned and embellished with layers of watercolor. Wen also plays with shades of light placing her animals in the diffracting prism of sunrise and sunset palettes.
Wen continues to hone her unique 'faceted' style of drawing animals in their various ecosystems. Wen carefully plans and selects colors for these vibrant abstracted landscapes, much like planning a stained-glass window. Wen also enjoys pop music and often regales the studio with renditions of Katy Perry songs and hits from the 1990s.
