Julien Borromeo
b. 1998 ∙ CE artist since 2021
Julien Borromeo’s unique artworks often are the result of quick and repetitive gestures, painting several washes of color on paper or repeatedly drawing symbols in a pattern. He loves commercials and brand names, often featuring them in his artwork, and likes to translate reference pictures of buildings, people, or objects into his own visual style. These reference materials come from various media including album covers, sci-fi novel covers, magazines, and textbooks. Without a reference picture, he will often fill an empty page with his library of marks and symbols, including infinity signs, crosses, check marks, stars, among others. Julien is a steadfast and iterative artist, continuing to revisit a piece and adding more and more layers, using every color of the rainbow before starting a new piece.
In the studio, Julien is enthusiastic, expressive, and cheerful, always bouncing with energy. He enjoys listening to music and is loves to participate in group activities, like our weekly dance party or meditation. He is dedicated to his creative practice, working fervently throughout the day on artworks or organizing his art supplies, like watercolors or Sharpie markers. Fun fact: Julien once exhibited his artwork at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City!
