Charles Stanberry

b. 1994, San Francisco CE artist since 2017

Charles Stanberry is a video game and cartoon enthusiast with a knack for accurately reproducing the likeness of well-known characters with pencil, pen, and marker.

Stanberry enjoys creating precise marker drawings of his favorite video game and cartoon characters and often includes himself in the scene, usually as “Super Charles,” an anime-style rendering of the artist complete with star-shaped white hair. Stanberry’s practice is defined by an unbounded imagination. He combines characters from multiple franchises in his drawings of original video game covers mixing SpongeBob, Mario, and Sonic the Hedgehog into the same series.

Stanberry often maps out each series on a separate piece of paper, assigning titles, dates, and character names to the next game or still in his series. Stanberry’s affinity for graphic illustration extends to his other subject matter, notably, his cityscapes. His strong perspectives and classical compositions capture his affinity for architectural forms.
