Allura Fong typically works with an assemblage process. She cuts out parts of her drawings and paintings and collages them together to create a colorful, expressive visage. Fong also enjoys using watercolor and ink. Her playful use of marks and loose brush strokes offer airy and playful compositions that drift off the page.
The layering in Fong’s artwork produces a floating effect that adds to the dreamy quality of her subject matter of hearts and organic shapes. Fong’s collage process has developed to include photocopies. These photocopies are assembled into a grid that serves as a figurative base over which she uses various media to cover, or accent, certain areas, creating a powerful combination of abstraction and realism.
Fong also has a rich practice of incorporating her collage aesthetic into animations accompanied with a voiceover by the artist herself. Her animation Hearts & Flowers (2015) exemplifies this approach. Fong is a core member of the Creativity Explored community, quick to strike up a conversation and compliment her fellow artists.
